John Davis’ Fine Form Continues

Early in the month and time for our regular visit to one of the more difficult tests in the area, Khao Kheow Country Club. Well laid out with plenty of water, bunkers, waste areas, and narrow landing areas, the course, no matter which nines one plays, is a true test for all players.  We are scheduled for the “A” and “B” nines this day, not the longest of the possible combinations but the most difficult per the ratings. Well fortified after the BJ’s “Golfers Breakfast” and with an eye on the weather, it has rained on us the last couple of outings, off up the 7 we head.

As we neared the course there were some dark clouds in the area and most figured we would for sure see a shower or two but a check of the radar did not show significant weather in the area so all registered and were soon teeing it up off the Yellow tees on “A-1” with a light breeze at their back. As we made our way around we found the course in fine condition even though a lot of low season maintenance is ongoing. Some tees are being re-sodded and some areas of fairways have been aerated to encourage growth but with the greens in great condition the course is fine to play and appears to be headed for first class condition by the upcoming high season. So how would the Tropical Golfers fair on this tough layout with the steady breeze seemingly always in ones face on the tougher holes but no rain.

Over the years it seems rare we have a winner beating their handicap at Khao Kheow. This day definitely confirmed that trend with John Davis carding a fine 37 points off his course handicap of 12 to take the top spot. Congratulations JD on you fine form and steady play.  Following John on the podium were Gordon Clegg (25) and Brian Parish (12) both with 35 points and Mick Coghlan (22) with 33 points. Honorable mentions went to Dick Warberg and John Pierrel for their “Best Nines” efforts. All in all a great day out with friends at a fine venue!

The Tropical Golf Group, a PSC affiliated group, generally play every Tuesday and Friday, meeting at “The BJ Holiday Lodge” located just off Pattaya Beach Rd on Soi 3. Stop by and check our bulletin board located in the restaurant. All levels of golfing ability are welcome for our friendly competitions.
